great news guys a new publishing agreement has been signed for Tales of the Buddha !

Jon Haward will be attending the Cardiff International Comic and Animation Expo on both days to sign and sketch plus sale art and prints to start celebrating his 25yrs in the business of comic art , and on the panel Sunday will give details of the new publisher for Tales of the Buddha before he got enlightened.

THE WORKS CARDIFF MARVEL POCKET BOOKS DISPLAY

My friend and fellow ace comic strip artist Simon Williams took photos of me standing next to displays of Panini Marvel pocket books at THE WORKS shop in Cardiff in Wales U.K on Saturday .
As you can see they are reduced from £3.99 to £1.99 so grab them while they are at cut price !

all the covers apart from the Spectacular Spiderman cover where penciled by me ,this cover was drawn by John Royle, but inside the Spectacular Spider-man collection was strip art that both I and Simon had drawn for Panini's Spectacular Spider-man Adventures comic if you read Simon's blog the shop even had the Spider-man annual and Marvel Heroes Annual 's that has Simon's art reprinted in them .

we asked the staff if it was ok to photo the covers saying we where the artists who worked on the books but they didn't seem to believe us , we chuckled and took some snaps on Simon's phone , here they are .

on sale in the shop even had Simon's art on the covers .
It was nice for both of us to see our work on display,

Had the pleasure last night to meet the one and only JOE CALZAGHE CBE, MBE

Britain's only undefeated boxing world champion,
Calzaghe was the longest-reigning boxing world champion of the modern era.
He has a fight record of 46-0, 32 of which by TKO and his father ENZO CALZAGHE MBE and his grand children when i attended their gym for a evening of entertainment and a demo of sparring .

my Father and I always enjoyed watching Joe strut his stuff in the ring , always nice to meet a icon who is down to earth and a easy going nice chap, no ego or body guards , his father was friendly and full of fun playing guitar he strutted out Johnny b good for the crowd and i really enjoyed my evening in their company.

I was asked by net communities.com to create the look of four new super heroes who would appear in a online comic , TEX, SUPER ADMIN, MOBILE AVENGER and DR RESCUE for this website itsupporthero.com I drew 24 pages of comic strip art the colouring on the project was by my good friend John Charles

yesterday i met the legendary boxing trainer Enzo Calzaghe M.B.E and toured his famous gym , he was a wonderful host who even made me and my friend Rob a coffee , i'm meeting his son on the 9th September can't wait as i'm a huge fan of Joe's my late father and i always enjoyed watching him fight in the ring .

Had a great time at the Forbidden Planet Mega store signing of SPIRIT OF HOPE and also at Orbitial Comics in London.

HAMLET is still chugging along the penciler David Lorenzo has 59 more pages to pencil,

currently i'm working on a web project where i have created the look of the characters and drawn comic strips to be used on a infomation website my work is being coloured by the talented JOHN CHARLES i hope i'll get to show the work sometime or put up a link to the website .

also i'm drawing humour art for a book pitch for a client using colour markers which has been a interesting job to draw ,again i hope down the road i can show images.

Last year i helped Artist Steve Pugh with Lovecraft's Pickman's Model written adaption for comics by Jamie Delano for The Lovecraft Anthology – volume II to be published next March by Self Made Hero , i drew character design suggestions and rough layouts for Steve for Pickman's model so he could get time to finish HOTWIRE ,it was a blast working with Steve as i'm a huge fan of his work and also we get on really well as friends , i hope we can work together again one day (fingers crossed).

the title of their first adventure was 'Hell Comes To Elf Town'.

In 1999/2000 Jon worked for Promethean Designs, a computer games development company, working in design and also as art director for GAMECOMICS.COM, drawing an on-line comic based on Promethean game Picassio.

Jon has worked designing and drawing for Rex Studios creating character and set designs for Themed attraction rides.

Sadly another great of the fine and commercial world of art has passed away , the wonderful Jeffrey Catherine Jones .
I first remember being in awe of this artists work while in college a friend brought in a book called the Studio and every image in the book was magical all the artists Barry Winsor Smith, Michael Wm. Kaluta, Jeffrey Jones and Bernie Wrightson where on top of their game .

Over the years i have admired Jones work the beautiful inked comic strips the wonderful fantasy paintings and the wonderful figure painting of women , this creative has left a magical amount of work which for me is timeless .

Another trip in the past this time to 1995, This comic only lasted two issues it was produced to promote a new toy line from Mattel Hotwheels ROAD MANIAX a kind of kid friendly Mad Max set in the U.S , i painted both covers plus drew and coloured some comic strips and cutaway illustrations of the Crash Cave Liberty Base in issue 1 and a baddie car in issue 2 , i enjoyed the work although the deadlines where tight.

Way back in the early 90's i had the honour working for Alan Fennell who was the founder and original editor of the magazine TV Century 21, he also edited Look -in and wrote episodes of the tv shows Thunderbirds, Stingray and Fireball Xl5.

I worked on the Fleetway Editions ltd comic Thunderbirds the comic ,i only drew two strips and some covers for Holiday Special and Thunderbirds collected strips books plus underwater creatures spreads for Stingray the comic but i enjoyed all the work due to being a fan since childhood of Gerry Anderson's TV puppet shows which where all done in Supermarionation.

here's one of my favourite pages which my brother owns i drew it on cs10 board with inks just like my comic book idol Frank Bellamy big mistake as the surface of the board was shiny and smooth and the ink would take ages to dry , i found it very difficult to work on ,thus for a poster mag job i reverted back to using ordinary card and markers.

So here's Thunderbird 2 and 4 to the rescue F.A.B !

well i had 10 great years working for Marvel U.K/Panini first on Spectacular Spider-man adventures ,then Marvel Rampage and the covers for Marvel Pocket books i would like to thank my Editors at Panini, Rob Jones, Tom o Malley, Ed Hammond and Alan O Keefe Managing Editor the wonderful writers, Mitchel Scanlon, Ferg Handley, Jim Alexander, Jason Quinn who allowed me to draw some fun comics, this is a huge blow for British freelance artists and writers also sad for Panini who over the years have produced great material for the kids market.
We have great talent in this small island , great artists and writers who sadly now won't get the chance to draw Marvel U.K material to entertain European youth ,i hope in the years to come people will have fond memories of these comics i know i will.

last night i went to a pub straight out of Hellboy comic the pub was facing a grave yard, near the church theres a mound hill , on the vine bush looking at the graveyard on the pub i saw a mans profile,(ie Green man) the church tower is almost a thousand years old ,in the sky i saw stars that made a cross , bats flew n the sky and inside the pub it was like going into a set for Treasure Island ,it was such a special spooky evening and the landlord Keith James has loads of info about laylines in the area and ghost stories, plus great open log fires and great beer, worth a visit if your visiting Wales.

This was drawn for East west records in 1995 for a Kerrang mag promo to promote the new album by Cancer called Black faith

I used 2 different styles in the art with the red ink being done on a cell overlay the poster was too big for a A3 scanner so you need to join page 1 and page 2 to get the full effect and to read it .

i met Dante Bonutto who was working for East west records and his office was a Kiss shrine with Kiss pin ball machine and masks and figures etc ,
had a blast on this job

1990'S ART OF KISS!! THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD

No secret I've been a big fan of Kiss since i was a teenager
seen them loads of times on stage with and without their make -up ,

here's a selection of art i drew in the 90's of the group ,the manga art was for a Kiss fan mag called CLOWN WHITE ,the other drawings and painting where drawn for fun .

A dream project for me would be a project where i worked with Gene Simmons
when i was 16yrs old i drew images based on the concept album Music from the Elder a very under rated album with a great story , i would love to draw the Elder as a official Kiss graphic novel i made a pitch awhile ago to Radical comics and Gene so far no feed back

I did how ever get a fax from Gene Simmons in the 90's
when i sent a package of art samples to him and the band including a humour comic strip called Shag a heavy metal roadie , Gene liked one of the strips and was interested in using it in a future publication not sure if it ever got used.

Gene published in 1995 a heavy large book with a slip case called Kisstory which i bought
in it where pages of fan art page 344 bottom left corner has a image that i drew for the Kiss international fan club it was a birthday card with Gene holding a cake it was signed by a fan convention for Gene's 32th birthday i was thrilled to think after all those years he still had the card it was drawn in 1981

strange but true Gene Simmons did a TV show called Rock School in 2005
based in my home town Lowestoft
his I.T guy who handle his computer set up at the country hall he was staying in
was from Kirkley Community High School called Paul Margetson the same guy who is my website guru! ,
sadly i never got to meet Gene in person for a chat about music and comics
although i sent him a package saying why didn't he have a imprint line of comics called Simmons comics where he was the publisher and have more control of content and art surprise surprise he did with Simmons comics group with IDW Publishing .

His CV of work shows the versatility and talents not just as a comic artist, but also as a designer and illustrator as well. His pencil work, ink work and colour work is exemplary and sets a great standard for present day comics here in the UK. He is a vastly underrated artist in my opinion and if ever the title "Hot artist" was deserved then it is in my opinion, due to be given Jon.
His ability to work with licensed characters, humour comics, adventure comics, children's pre-school comics, superheroes and now classical Shakespearian characters shows just how wide a style range Jon can cope with, with his storytelling.

just recently celebrated my 45 birthday!!
met up with John Stokes and his wonderful wife Elizabeth along with my brother Jim ,we at long last presented John Stokes his 70th Birthday tribute card that was featured in a recent blog http://hawardarthouse.blogspot.com/2010/08/all-hail-john-stokes.html

the card was drawn by Chris Weston , Barry Kitson myself and my brother Jim the card was over 8 months late but so glad to be able to finally be able to present him with it ,here's a photo of us from the lunch we had in Norwich

at the moment i have a few labour of love scripts to draw for friends and Hamlet to finish plus trying to pack my things after my fathers death i have to relocate myself so his house can be sold ,the last 4 years as well as draw i cared for him , I'm grateful though that i had those special years with him and i would like to thanks my friends who gave me support and kindness through those dark days of his illness .

as you can see recently on the blog i have been reflecting a bit on my 1990's work , all the different styles and failed pitches and the successful work i guess that's due to turning 45 in age/ middle aged where did my youth go? any way thanks for keep viewing this blog , i find it amazing to see I've nearly had 30,000 views

This page was penciled by me and inked by my brother Jim then i coloured it in markers and pencils this story was drawn for a Sonic the Hedgehog annual edited by Barrie Tomlinson ,the story was written by the regular Shinobi writer Alan Mckenzie

Here's a few pages from the Eternal Champions special i drew way back in 1994 ,in those days i did all the art pencils, inks and colouring using colour markers and pencils some times for the wizz speed lines i would ink using a blue or red pen of course now with photoshop and painter you would be able to do so many more effects

on reflection this work still looks very strong ,i enjoyed drawing these characters for the special and Sonic the Comic and in 94 i was a keen reader of Spawn so that's reflected in my layouts and dynamics of these pages

this scan is from a colour photocopy the original art was sent to Todd McFarlane ,
In the 90's i was a huge fan of Spawn and Todd's work
his layouts his touches of Manga in his art the use of shadow and the stories where also good
i owned the first 60 issues.
